ABOUT "IN ABEYANCE"
The future of Hemlock and Canadice Lakes hangs in the balance. Will these watersheds remain pristine, or will they be gravely compromised? Pondering these questions, area artists Christine Sevilla (photographer) and Gloria Betlem (pastel painter) have collaborated on an exhibit to offer their views of the unique qualities of Hemlock and Canadice Lakes. They have invited noted photographer Kent Divers, who has a large body of work on these lakes, to exhibit work with them. They have asked environmental consultant and poet Stephen Lewandowski to provide opening remarks to set the context and history of these important watersheds. Mr. Lewandowski’s remarks, the art work and the conversation provide a focus for contemplation of the value and the future of the “little lakes”.

ABOUT THE SHOW
The artwork will feature pastels by Gloria Betlem that reflect her spiritual and emotional response, with playful recognizable imagery, of the areas she often visits. Christine Sevilla will exhibit photographs and a set of artist books that convey the range of emotions around the tentative state of the lakes. Kent Divers' photos appeal to a meditative and focused experience of the quietude of these pristine lakes.

ABOUT THE LAKES
The lands surrounding pristine Hemlock and Canadice Lakes have been preserved by the City of Rochester for well over 100 years. Indeed, the City considers the lakes it’s “Crown Jewels.” These lakes have received several awards for water quality, and the threat of water scarcity with global warming makes their waters increasingly valuable. Jim Howe, Executive Director of The Western New York Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, said on Bob Smith’s WXXI radio show, “If the country had been settled from west to east the Finger Lakes would be our Yellowstone Park.”

Environmental consultant, Stephen Lewandowski says, "The chance to protect the little lakes won't come again- not in this lifetime; no other lakes are like them." However, the undisputed value of these lakes has not yielded a promise that they are safe from purchase and development.
